In the late 1800s, explorers hoping to strike it rich in the silver mines settled in Ute City, which was renamed Aspen in 1880.  The year of its official renaming, Aspen’s population was a mere 300. During the next decade, which boomed with mining fortune, some 12,000 people called Aspen home. The high life brought two railroads, four schools, 10 churches, brothels, an opera house and electricity to the mountain town where Jerome B. Wheeler built the Hotel Jerome in 1889.  The Hotel Jerome became the social and civic centerpiece of Aspen, which by 1891 had become the country’s largest silver-producing district.

Two years later Aspens’ mining luck ended, when gold became the national standard.

The next economic boost came in the 1930s, when the annual winter snow cover began to attract skiers.  While plans to construct the first ski resort were deferred by the advent of World War II, in 1947 Aspen Mountain opened for business.  It was during the late 1940s and early 1950s that the “Aspen Idea” was also born – the revitalization of mind, body and spirit – resulting in the establishment of world-renowned institutions, the Aspen Institute, Aspen Music Festival & School and the International Design Conference.  Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands opened shortly there after in 1958, followed by Snowmass in 1968.
